Wine is one of the most popular alcoholic beverages consumed in the world today but the market is changing. E-commerce, while still small received a large boost during the pandemic that seems here to stay. Like with broader food and beverage trends, consumers are increasingly interested in wines that align with their ethics and environmental principles. Despite new trends, the old world is still the center of the market. France, Italy, and Spain are still the leading wine-producing and wine-exporting countries. Other notable wine-producing regions in the world include the United States, Australia, South Africa, Germany, Argentina, and Chile.
State of the market
Still wine is the kind of table wine, that most people think of when they think of the beverage. It makes up the lion's share of the market, 84 percent or 260 billion U.S. dollars in 2022. Consumption of wine peaked in 2007 and 2008 with a volume of 250 million hectoliters, before leveling-off for about a decade at 244 million hectoliters. After a second peak in 2017, consumption has again shrunk, settling at 232 million hectoliters in 2022. The United States was the global leader in terms of wine consumption, outperforming Europe's wine-producing regions such as France and Spain with 34 million hectoliters consumed in the U.S. in 2022.
Organic wine
Just as organic farming has been growing around the world, so too is its presence growing in the wine industry. The organic share of vineyard area grew again in 2021 to represent nearly eight percent of all vineyard land use in the world. Wineries offering organic wine are appealing to the broader demand among consumers for healthier products with a focus on sustainable land use. Spain, which has the most vineyard area overall, was also the world leader in terms of organic vineyard area in 2021. Other similar trends include biodynamic wine, which attempts to improve upon organic wine by tying farming practices to natural cycles, and vegan wine. Animal proteins are often used as fining agents to remove sediment particles from wine as well as beeswax to seal bottles making them unsuitable for consumers interested in veganism. Vegan wines replace these steps with plant-based alternatives or omit them entirely.
